The Ghana Football Association has asked all Ghanaian clubs to observe a minute of silence in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the May 9th stadium disaster.
In a statement signed by Lawyer Prosper Harrison Addo, the General Secretary of the GFA, dated 6th may 2021, the FA charged all clubs (the Ghana Premier League Clubs, Division One League Clubs, and Women’s Premier League Clubs) to all adhere to this instructions before kick-off during this weekend matches at the various stadiums.
“In commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the MAY 9th STADIUM DISASTER, the FAhas decided that a minute silence be observe before kick-off of the various competition during this weekend matches”, the statement read.
The statement, copied to the Referees Committee, Match Commissioners Association, Regional FAs’ and the Media also started that all teams are to put on a black arm bands.
“We also encourage teams to put on black arm bands in remembrance of the departed”,
“By copy of this correspondence all stakeholders are to take note and act accordingly”.
On May 9th 2001, over 127 football fans lost their lives at the Accra sports stadium in a Ghana Premier League match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko. The disaster occurred after riots broke among some section of the fans in protest against a referee’s decision to make a Hearts of Oak second goal count, despite the fans claiming it to be an offside goal.
