Maxwell Konadu’s Black Stars B defeated Gambia 1-0 on Tuesday to begin their WAFU title defence in Senegal.
Accra Hearts of Oak star striker Joseph Esso scored the only goal of the game to keep the hopes of defending the title alive. The victory over Gambia means the Black Stars B, 2017 winners of the competition, have qualified to the quarter finals of the tournament.
It was a hard fought victory for the defending champions as Gambia pressed harder in the first half in search for the opener, same as Ghana. Ghana saw most of the exchanges in the first department of the game, but both teams looked very tactically cautious, ending the first half goalless.
Maxwell Konadu’s tactical variations finally paid off in the second half when Joseph Esso broke the deadlock in the 67th minute, coolly tapping home a Ibrahim Moro’s cross from the left side of the Ghana’s attack.
Ghana will now face Burkina Faso in the quarter finals on Friday at the Stade Lat-Dior, Thies.
