Dillian Whyte’s had a lot to say recently, as he awaits a new date for a planned fight with Alexander Povetkin, and one of the topics has been UFC heavyweight Francis Ngannou.
The whole thing started with Whyte telling Eddie Hearn and Tony Bellew that Ngannou would be foolish to try and stand with him in an MMA fight, basically, and Ngannou responding by saying he’d definitely be willing to do boxing, although until just recently he’d never heard of Whyte.
Whyte tells Sky Sports that Ngannou would have no chance against him in boxing — which is probably true — and also took some shots at Ngannou’s personality, or lack thereof:
“Ngannou is dumber than he sounds if he thinks he’s going to do anything in boxing. If he turned up to fight me like the coward that he was against Derrick Lewis I’d hurt him and knock him clean out. That was officially the most boring fight in UFC history. The only thing more boring is his personality. If I called him a potato it would be a compliment. He reminds me of that other deluded coward Deontay Wilder. Ngannou has to be the most boring man on the planet. A speck of dust has more personality. … If he wants it and wants to earn some real money, let’s get it on and stop talking about it. Don’t talk about it, let’s just do it.”
Whyte (27-1, 18 KO) and Ngannou (15-3 in MMA) would be able to sell some pay-per-views in both the US and UK, but it’s still not likely to happen. One figures if Dana White would agree to all but sacrifice a heavyweight star, it’d have to be against a Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua, not Dillian Whyte — no offense to Whyte, who is a serious contender and all.
In all reality, Whyte’s focus should be on Povetkin (35-2-1, 24 KO), as the 40-year-old Russian is absolutely nobody to take lightly, still a real contender himself, and he’s no gimme opponent to set Whyte up for that potential, long-delayed shot at the WBC belt in 2021.
