Black Stars skipper Andre Ayew and has missed the chance to return the English top flight after losing out on the Championship play-off finals following Swansea’s 3-1 loss to Brendtford at the Griffin Park on Wednesday night.
Swansea went into the match with a 1-0 lead after Ayew’s sole strike in the first leg at the Liberty Stadium, but failed to hold on to their advantage after Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Marcondes struck twice in quick succession to put Brendtford into a commanding lead.
Coach Steve Cooper and his charges found no antidote to the prowess of the home side as a third strike from Bryan Mbeumo in the 46th minute proved too huge a deficit for Ayew and his teammates to overturn.
The Swans responded after the half hour mark through a 78th minute strike from Rhian Brewster as they pressed harder for an aggregate leveler, but Brendtford kept their composure and held on to an impenetrable defence to keep the score at 3-1 in their favour.
All efforts by Swansea to find a second goal to push the match into extra time fell on rocks as the referee blew for the end of proceedings after the stipulated time. The Jacks have now crashed out of the play-offs and Brendtford wait for the winner between Fulham and Cardiff City for a showdown at Wembley on Tuesday.
