Like every season, European football’s governing body has revealed the rankings of its clubs. And for the first time since 2014, Real Madrid are no longer in the lead.
Bayern Munich took over from Liverpool in the Champions League winners’ list. A sixth European crown that allowed the Bavarians to return to the level of the Reds. But not only that. The triumph of Kingsley Coman’s teammates also marks the end of an incredible merengue chapter. Leader of the UEFA club rankings since 2014, Real Madrid has finally been dethroned.
UEFA has published its ranking for the 2019/2020 season. A ranking that, as a reminder, takes into account the last five years. With 136,000 points, the new European champion reclaims the leading position of the Spaniards (134,000). Winner of the Champions League in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018, Real Madrid begin to pay for their two successive eliminations from the round of 16 (in 2019 by Ajax and in 2020 by Manchester City).
The end of the merengue reign
Third in this ranking with 128,000, FC Barcelona could overtake madrid’s rival as early as next season if the Catalans have a third best season in a row in Europe than Casa Blanca (semi-final in 2019, quarter-final in 2020). For the rest, the unfortunate finalist of the 2019/2020 edition of the cup with big ears, Paris Saint-Germain, climbs one place and now points to seventh place (113,000).
Always on the French side, note the excellent operation of Olympique Lyonnais. Eliminated in the quarter-finals by Bayern Munich, the Rhodanian club did better than last season (released in 1/8th by Barça) and went from 27th to 15th place. A good performance that will not be improved in 2020/2021 since the Gones will be deprived of the European Cup.
