The wait for the resumption of football in Ghana continues as Government decides to put on hold the restart of all contact sports as part of its measures to mitigate against the spread of the novel coronavirus disease.
During his 16th address to the nation on Sunday, August 30, 2020 on Government’s measures taken against the spread of coronavirus in the country, president of the Republic, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo reiterated that all contact sports including football, remain suspended until further notice. The President, who described himself as “a known lover of football” said his administration is intuitive of the imminent participation of the national teams in international competitions, and will, in the next couple of weeks, take a stock on the much anticipated return of football in the country.
Addressing the nation for the 16th time on government’s covid-19 combat measures, the President took time to hint on a soon return of contact sports as non contact sports continue under strict adherence of lay down covid-19 protocols.
“In the next couple of weeks, a decision will also be taken on the resumption of contact sports, including football, taking into consideration the imminent participation of our national teams in international competitions”, the President stated.
He insisted, that he is a known lover of football and hopes that the game returns sooner than later for all stakeholders.
“As a known lover of football, I know how devastating its absence has been and it is my hope that very soon we will all have the pleasure of playing and watching the beautiful game again. Until then, non contact sports are the only sporting events permitted to take place”, he concluded.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has scheduled Tuesday, September 1, 2020 to hold its 26th Ordinary Congress session ahead of the 2020/2021 football season, where it is expected to settle on at least a provisional date for the start of the new football season.
