Ahead of the Black Stars scheduled international friendly match against Mali on October 9, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced that coach CK Akonnor will announce his squad for the game this evening.
According to the GFA, the “Black Stars Head Coach CK Akonnor will announce the Black Stars squad for next month’s friendlies LIVE ON GFA NEWS @ 4:30pm”.
Ghana were to play two international friendlies against Mali on October 9, and also against Equatorial Guinea on October 12, but the latter pulled out of the game on Thursday via a letter addressed to the GFA, “citing new travel restrictions imposed in their country. Equatorial Guinea’s borders are closed, and flights are suspended due to new COVID-19 rules”.
This will be only the second time CK Akonnor will be naming a squad for a Black Stars game since March last year, when he named a 23-man squad featuring 4 local players for AFCON 2021 qualifiers against Sudan. The matches were cancelled due to covid-19 outbreak.
It is left to be seen whether any of those local players he invited in March -Richard Atta, Habib Mohammed and Yahaya Mohammed will maintain their invitations, or will be left out due to the long absence of active football in the country.
