Premier league side Asante Kotoko have unilaterally terminated their kit sponsorship deal with Club Consult Africa with immediate effect to pave way for a “befitting kits sponsor” to be announced soon, a club statement has confirmed.
The two parties have been entangled in disagreements over the past few weeks concerning the quality of the Strike kits the club has received from Club Consult Africa and the terms of the contract binding the two. These issues rose following the appointment of Nana Yaw Amponsah as Asante Kotoko CEO.
The deal with Club Consult Africa, signed in 2018, was expected to run till 2021, but Nana Yaw Amponsah led administration took a stance to cancel the deal despite the other party thinking otherwise, and now the deal is off.
“Asante Kotoko SC wishes to inform our stakeholders and the general public that the kits supply sponsorship and purchase agreement signed with Club Consult Africa has been terminated with immediate effect”, the statement announced.
The statement further assured fans of the club of new kits sponsorship deal, which it describes would be a “befitting” one, with the fans given the opportunity to choose which design is better for the club.
“We wish to assure our most cherished stakeholders that a new befitting kits sponsor will not only be announced shortly but also our fans will be given the opportunity to select their preferred design for the 2020/2021 football season”.
The new management of the club has had issues with the nature of the kits sponsorship deal with Club Consult Africa, and has tasked the legal department of the club to review every contract signed before their appointment by the club. Nana Yaw Amponsah, the CEO, told the press at the unveiling ceremony of the club management members, that “No brand will take Kotoko for granted under my watch. I’m prepared to put my neck on the chopping board to protect Kotoko”.
He further stated his readiness to battle any company sponsoring Kotoko that threatens legal action against the club when the club opts to terminate their sponsorship. “Those who are threatening legal action, we’ll match them boot for boot”, he warned. To him, some of the current sponsors of Asante Kotoko “are not even worth the papers” on which the deal was signed, and he is ready to clear them out. It is therefore not surprising that the strike deal has been terminated, and more may follow in the coming days.
