The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has officially announced the cancellation of the 2020 U-17 and U-20 Women’s World Cup tournaments due to the resurging covid-19 pandemic.
On Monday, December 21, 2020, FIFA wrote to its Member Associations through the mother continental federations to announce the cancellation of the two tournaments.
“We regret to inform you that due to the worldwide situation that was strongly affected by the COVID 19 as well as the difficulties all confederations are facing to complete the qualifiers phase, FIFA decided to cancel both the U-17 & U-20 Women’s World Cups -2020. Consequently, the phases of all the continental qualifiers are as well cancelled. All member associations affiliated to CAF are kindly requested to take note of the cancellation of all the matches of the qualifier’s phases of the above-mentioned competitions”, the letter is quoted as saying by the Ghana Football Association.
Ghana’s female junior national teams – the Black Maidens (U-17) and the Black Princesses (U-20) have been preparing for the said tournaments by playing friendly matches, among them are the rent international friendlies played against Morocco, where their Ghanaian outfits came out as victors. The two teams however broke camp in October following a temporal suspension of the qualifiers.
