Aduana Stars central defender Farouk Adams has been denied bail after allegedly knocking to death a policeman, Constable Amos Mattey on Monday, March 1, 2021.
Farouk was is said to have been involved in a hit-and-run accident on the Asuotiano-Asuhyie stretch on the Berekum to Dormaa-Ahenkro highway, where he allegedly hit the late Constable Amos Mattey to death on the spot. The case was taken to Berekum Circuit Court after he had been arrested an detained in the Wamfie police custody to assist the police carry out investigations.
On Thursday, March 4, the Berekum Circuit Court ruled that it is unable to grant Farouk bail pending further investigations, and has ruled that the footballer be kept in police custody untill Thursday, March 18, 2021 when the court will sit again for further determinations. Farouk has since been charged with six offences at the Berekum Circuit Court and has been remanded into police custody in Wamfie for two weeks.
The charges as outlined by the prosecutor include: careless and inconsiderate driving, negligently causing harm, failing to report accident to police, failing to stop to attend to an accident victim, driving motor vehicle without valid road use certificates and driving motor vehicle without valid insurance.
Counsel for the accused, Mr Baafour Akoto filed an application requesting for bail for his client, but the court, presided over by Mr Osei Kofi Amoako refused the bail application.
“What I expect on the 18th [March] is that we will reopen the application (for bail), and I expect that this time around the court will release him and grant him the bill so he can continue with his vocation of playing football, until the final determination of the case”, Counsel for Farouk, Mr Baafour Akoto told the press after the hearing on Thursday.
According to the police, Adams was a Toyota Camry vehicle with registration number GW 5882-17 from Sunyani towards Dormaa-Ahenkro on the said day, when he knocked down Constable Amos Mattey, who has now joined the heavenly choir as a result. Adams knocked down an oncoming motorbike which was being used by Constable Amos Maatey Niganoka of blessed memory, after he (Farouk Adams) veered off his lane into the opposite lane.
According to the police, investigations were extended to the DVLA in Sunyani where it was revealed that the said vehicle was registered in the name of one Albert Asare, a resident of Dormaa-Ahenkro. Further findings revealed that the road worthiness as well as insurance covering the vehicle had expired since June 13, 2018 while the real number plate of the car had also been removed.
Farouk Adams is expected to reappear before the court on Thursday, March 18, 2021 for the continuation of the case.
