Both strikers failed to find the net in the final on Saturday evening, but Uganda’s Derrick Kakooza’s prior 2-goal lead was enough to secure him the golden boot of the just ended tournament ahead of Ghana and Dream FC’s Percious Boah.
The Black Satellites sought to make a reality a dream to lift their 4th title at the U-20 level at the Africa Cup of Nations for Ghana, but striker Percious Boah had a double target of helping his nation Ghana to lift the trophy, as well as helping himself to clinching the top scorer of the tournament award. He aimed to repeat the feat achieved by fellow countryman Ransford Osei in 2009 when Ghana won her third title.
On the contrary, Boah’s golden boot winning dream failed to materialise as he was pipped to the individual prize by Ugandan striker Derrick Kakooza. Before the final, Kakooza had scored 5 goals in the tournament as against Boah’s 3, and both strikers went into the game eyeing the individual trophy. Ghana beat Ugunada 2-0 in the final to win the ultimate, and Boah could only manage with an assist, having provided the second goal with a deflecting carpet cross into the box which was finished off by skipper and Hearts of Oak star Daniel Barnie Afriyie.
Uganda’s Kakooza has now become the first East African to clinch the golden boot prize at the U20 AFCON. Congratulations to him and better lack next time to Percious Boah.
