Home side CS Sfaxien paid the ultimate penalty, missing one spot-kick and conceding from another as they lost by a solitary goal to JS Kabilye in the first leg of their Total CAF Confederation Cup quarter final tie on Sunday.
Firas Chaouat missed a penalty for Sfaxien at the stroke of halftime and they were hit with the same blade in the second half when skipper Rida Bensayah scored from the spot to hand Kabilye a massive victory with the only goal of the match.
In an opening half when the home side only saw 32pc of possession and had no single effort on target, they had an opportunity to get a slim lead to halftime when Chaouat was brought down by a clumsy challenge from Kabilye keeper Oussama Benbout.
However, the burly forward placed his penalty wide and over despite sending the keeper the wrong way.
They were made to pay in the 61st minute when Kabilye converted a penalty of their own after Mohamed Ben Ali handled inside the box.
The home side seemed to have been jolted after conceding and began to play a more attacking game seeking to get back into the tie. However, they could not get the ball in the net with keeper Benbout making several decent saves.
They thought they had an equalizer in the 89th minute when Azmi Ghouma reacted quickest after the keeper had spilled Kingsley Eduwo’s shot inside the box, but the second assistant referee’s flag was up for offside.
