Chelsea didn’t have a huge amount of beef with Leicester City until recently, but the doubleheader has meant a little flare-up of rivalry that could last.
Defender Antonio Rudiger after helping Chelsea defeat Leicester City has taken a swipe at Daniel Amartey after the Ghanaian defender threw the Blues pennant on the floor after the FA Cup triumph.
The Blues were beaten in the FA Cup final on Saturday but got their revenge on Tuesday night as they beat the Foxes 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to leapfrog them in the table and in the reckoning for a Champions League place.
Chelsea took the lead through Rudiger from a corner that was well delivered and the German international rose high to head home, Stamford erupted.
Jorginho added the second from the spot after Fofana brought down Timo Werner and the Blues were awarded a penalty.
Out of nowhere, it was game on as Chelsea conceded after losing possession in their own defensive third. Ndidi robbed Kovacic then working the ball infield to substitute Iheanacho, who was in acres of space inside the Chelsea box, and slid a cool finish into the bottom corner.
During the game, several Chelsea players were enraged by a reckless challenge from Leicester full-back Ricardo Pereira on Ben Chilwell.
Within moments several Leicester players piled into back up their teammate, including some from the bench – such as Daniel Amartey. The 26-year-old was given a caution for his troubles.
Amartey made his way into the headlines following Leicester’s FA Cup final win over the Blues on Saturday, when he threw Chelsea’s pennant to the ground in celebration.
In the wake of the match, Rudiger fired a potshot — claiming they had to punish their opponents because some of them don’t know how to celebrate a victory.
“Unfortunately some people of their team don’t know how to celebrate and we had to punish them for this. Don’t disrespect the club (Chelsea) history. This is a bit bigger than you,” Rudiger said in a post-match interview.
The Blues now jump above Leicester into third, leaving the Foxes to sweat on Liverpool’s remaining results. The Champions League race is going to the wire.
