Brentford beat Swansea 2-0 at Wembley to clinch promotion to the English Premier League for the first time in 73 years.
In the north London sunshine, a crowd of 20,000 fans produced a raucous ruckus as supporters from both teams soaked up the biggest event on the Football League calendar.
And the Swans’ terrible start became significantly worse after Ivan Toney converted a penalty after Freddie Woodman had hauled down Josh Dasilva on 10 minutes.
Emi Marcones pounced on to a pass by Mads Roserlev and scored with aplomb just eight minutes later to make things even better for the Bees.
The Swans almost trimmed their lead in half in the second half, but Andre Ayew’s diving header sailed just wide.
But, despite applying sustained pressure, the Swans’ task was made even more difficult when Jay Fulton was sent off for a horrible tackle on Mathias Jensen.
It made an already difficult assignment even tougher, and the south Wales side labored in the final quarter as Brentford clinched promotion to the Premier League.
This is the second time Ayew’s Swansea couldn’t secure promotion in a row. Last season, Swansea lost to Fulham in the playoff and then losing this season to Brentford in the final.
Ayew, a key figure for Swansea, who contributed 17 goals and 4 assists will miss the EPL after his side couldn’t secure promotion.
