Current Black Stars skipper, Andre Ayew has put ex-Ghana captain Stephen Appiah’s leadership into two words ’top class’.
According to Ayew, there are three things that made ‘Tonado’ a great leader, charisma, putting Ghana at heart, and his technical abilities on the pitch.
“I think he is someone who had the charisma, the love of Ghana and was also marvelous on the field. This allowed him to control everything that was happening in the squad”. He told Joy FM
The former Swansea man added that Appiah’s leadership qualities are gifted by nature.
“The first time I came into the Black Stars he was the leader and I really watched him and took a lot from him because he had that thing [leadership qualities] he did not learn, it’s a gift by God. That’s why he was able to achieve all that he achieved”
Appiah captained the Nation from 2004-2010.
The former Juventus midfielder led Ghana to a maiden World Cup in 2006 two years after he was handed the arm band then a second World Cup appearances in 2010, which Ghana failed to make the semis, exiting the quarterfinals on penalties.
Andre Ayew in his 12 years at Black Stars has played under three captains, Stephen Appiah, John Mensah, and Asamoah Gyan.
When asked about John Mensah he said: “He wasn’t a big talker but he had the respect of everyone mainly because e performed on the picth. I don’t remember him having a bad game in a Black Stars jersey.”
“He didn’t speak much. He was always in his corner but he spoke on the pitch and his performance will make you understand what he was telling you.”
On Asamoah Gyan
“He was jovial and more into the laughter side of things with the players. He had that ability to interact with any player due to the way he conducted himself. “
