Elmina Sharks have filed a protest against Legon Cities over the use of an unqualified player during their Ghana Premier League matchweek 33 fixture at the Nduom Stadium on Sunday.
Elmina Sharks went into week 33 desperate for a lifeline and they were able to secure just that with a 2-0 win over Legon Cities with goals from Bernard Boateng and James Bissue.
Two days after the game, Sharks have filed a protest challenging the illegibility of Legon Cities defender Issaka Mohammed, arguing he was on 3 yellow cards prior to their clash and have petitioned the Disciplinary Committee of the GFA.
According to Sharks, the player had earlier accumulated three (3) yellow cards prior to the game, and was thus, expected to face a mandatory one-match suspension in the fixture which Legon Cities lost 2-0.
Sharks claim the player who happens to be their former player received his first booking of the season while playing for Elmina Sharks in their matchweek 5 fixture against Ashantigold in Obuasi.
Again, he was booked in Elmina Sharks’ matchweek 7 game against Karela United in Anyinase before he was transferred to Legon Cities. He received his third yellow card in Legon Cities’ matchweek 25 away game against WAFA and therefore was not eligible to feature n Sunday’s game.
Legon Cities who are currently 14th on the league log with 39 points, if found guilty will automatically attract a three-point deduction and three goals which will hamper their chances of serving in the Premier League.
After beating Legon Cities, Sharks are now level on points with neighbors, Ebusua Dwarfs (38 points), while they are a point behind Liberty Professionals and Legon Cities and two points behind King Faisal.
