Medeama SC seals CAF Confederation Cup slot after Asante Kotoko exit from the MTN FA Cup

Medeama SC will have the opportunity to represent Ghana in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup if they are able to win this year’s MTN FA Cup.

Hearts of Oak – who beat Elmina Sharks by a lone goal courtesy Caleb Amankwaa’s strike to make it to the semifinals – cannot claim that slot, after winning the Ghana Premier League to feature in CAF Champions League.

After eliminating third-tier Attram de Visser in the quarter-finals, Medeama have a date with Hearts of Oak. The Mauve and Yellow have the chance now to represent Ghana next year in the Confederation Cup.

The other two semi-finalists Berekum Chelsea and AshantiGold failed to submit bid, means the outcome of a potential title win will be inconsequential.

This is because the Mauve and Yellows is the only surviving club that has been granted a provisional license to participate in the CAF inter-club competition next season.

The Club Licensing Department opened a general application last month for clubs willing to participate in next season’s CAF Inter-Club competitions to apply for licence in line with the new CAF directives and timetable.

In all, six clubs, including Legon Cities, Aduana FC and Great Olympics applied for licenses but were denied after their exit from the competition in the round of 16.

Asante Kotoko were dealt a blow as they lost via penalties to Berekum Chelsea. Mariano Barreto and his charges are left with no option to make it to CAF inter-club competition. They now have to prepare fervently and make amends next season.

Meanwhile, the Cape Coast Stadium have been given conditional approval to use as home venue for Medeama as part of the licensing process with the Akoon Park approved as the training facility for the CAF Licensing Process.
