Medeama SC have withdrawn their interest in presenting Ghana in the CAF Confederations cup citing lack of ‘sporting merit’ as the reason for their decision, according to ghanasoccernet.

The Yellow and Mauves feel playing in Africa through the back door- without winning the league cup is undeserving.

The Tarkwa based side was one of the two semi-finalists in the MTN FA Cup who had been granted the license to participate in African’s second-tier inter-club competition.

Medeama had an automatic qualification despite the semi-final exit on the account of other semi-finalists, Ashanti Gold and Berekum Chelsea failing to apply for the license while Asante Kotoko who applied bow out in the quarter-finals.

In a quote by ghanasoccernet, the club has decided to pull out after failing to make the finals following the 3-0 defeat to Hearts of Oak.

“We are no more interested in playing in Africa. We want to qualify and represent the country on sporting merit,”

“We believe the winner of the FA Cup should be given the chance to represent the country. Yes, we wanted to play in Africa and have the resources to do so but we don’t believe it will be on sporting merit.”

The finals of the competition that grant a slot in the Confederations Cup will be hosted at Accra Sports Stadium as Ashanti Gold battles Hearts of Oak.

The Phobians have already secured a slot in the Champions League after clinch the Ghana Premier League which means the Miners may seek special dispensation from CAF to play in the Confederations Cup if they emerge as the winner of the domestic Cup on Sunday.
