Ghana’s all-time top-scorer, Asamoah Gyan is looking forward to the Black Stars lifting the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon after coming close several times.
The tournament was originally scheduled to take place in June-July 2020 but was postponed twice due to unfavourable climate conditions and later COVID-19 effect. Hence, Africa’s international showpiece will eventually kick off from January 9- February 6, 2022.
Gyan appeared in two AFCON finals, 2010 and 2015 but unfortunately lost respectively 1-0 to Egypt and a penalty shootout defeat to Cote d’Ivoire.
As a whole, Ghana after winning a fourth AFCON title in 1982 has since appeared 6 times in the semi-finals, reaching the finals on three occasions.
Therefore, ‘Baby Jet’ as he is popularly known is hopeful that the forthcoming tournament will end the country’s over three decades wait for a fifth trophy.
“Since 2008 out worst is the semi-final so it is like we have always been coming closer to the cup but we don’t get it. I think back home everybody wants nothing but the cup. It doesn’t matter the performance it’s about the cup so that is what we are praying for.” he said during the 2021 AFCON group stage draw.
Ghana was paired with Morocco alongside Comoros and Gabon in Group C.
