President of Ghana, H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo has announced that Ghana’s only medalist at the 2022 Tokyo Olympic games, Samuel Takyi will receive a car and $30,000 as a reward.
Takyi won bronze in the men’s featherweight category, ending the country’s 29 years wait for an Olympics medal.
The President announced that “the Golden Ring Warrior” will pocket $10,000 with the remaining $20,000 going into a sports development fund for the young boxer.
“For the first time ever, a Ghanaian athlete, Samuel Takyi, was selected to represent Africa at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games,
“For the first time in the history of the 4th Republic, Ghana won a medal at the Olympics.”
“Out of the 52 African countries that participated at the Olympics, Ghana placed 10th on the continent.
“This should spur us on to even greater heights in future competitions.
“On behalf of the people of Ghana, a say a big hearty ‘ayekoo’ to all of you. You made the country proud,” President Akufo-Addo said as quoted by citisportsonline after Ghana’s Olympics visited the Jubilee House on Friday, August 20.
