Ghana secured a 1-0 victory over Ethiopia in their opening 2022 Fifa World Cup qualification Group G match at the Cape Coast Stadium on Friday evening.
The win will give the Black Stars some much-needed confidence ahead of their second Group G game against South Africa on Monday, while Ethiopia are scheduled to face the Zimbabwe the same day.
The Black Stars dominated the game from the start and Andre Ayew fired the first warning in the 10th minute as the captain header narrowly missed the target.
The deadlock was then broken on the 35th-minute following a perfectly executed long drive which goalkeeper Shanko failed to deal with.
Ethiopia lifted up their performance in the second half and came attacking the Black Stars but failed to create any scoring opportunity in the game.
A double save by substitute goalkeeper Fasil Gebremichael in the 73rd minute prevented Ghana from getting the second of the night following a long drive by Yaw Yeboah and a follow-up by skipper Ayew.
The Walia Ibex with their best chance in the game in the 84th minute after a shot by Shemeket Gugsa from close range was parried away by goalkeeper Richard Ofori.
The hosts defended very well in the closing proceedings and ultimately the match ended in a 1-0 victory in favour of Ghana.
