Three Ghanaian Coaches to replace CK Akonnor if GoG insist on appointing local coach to lead the Black Stars

Ghana Football Association Executive Council(Exco) on Monday, September 13 axed Black Stars Coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor over poor performance.

CK AKONNOR

Exco has set up a four-member committee to appoint a new Black Stars Coach in the coming days.

At the moment it is down to who replace the former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Ok head Coach in the National Team dugout? Local or Expatriate?

CK lived on a time bomb after Ghana’s defeat to South Africa earlier this month in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers where the team failed to record a shot on target.

There was a social media roar for CK to be sacked and the gaffer in due course has been shown the exit after 11 games, 4 wins, 2 draws and 5 defeats.

The Government of Ghana(GoG) in 2020 insisted on appointing a Ghanaian Coach following Kwesi Appiah’s exit and thus Akonnor was appointed.

If the same situation replicates, these are the three Ghanaian coaches the FA will be looking at per reports reaching ghanasportspage.com

Ghanaian Coaches that could be appointed based on GoG’s demands include

Otto Addo

The 46 year old had a seven-year spell with Black Stars during his playing days. He was capped 15 times from 1999-2006.

He was part of the squad that made Ghana’s debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2006 where he featured in the second group game against Czech Republic.

Addo’s coaching career has been on the rise after his retirement in 2008. Many believes he tick all the boxes to be the head Coach of the Senior National team.

The Ghanaian-German has already served the Black Stars as head scout from 2013-2015.

He started his coaching career at Humburger SV in 2009 the team he last played before retiring.

The fast rising manager went through the rankings of Humburger, from Youth Team coach to assistant manager within five years.

He has since had spells with Nordsjælland, Borussia Monchengladbach and currently Borussia Dortmund, all as assistant coach. He won his first trophy in 2021 following Dortmund’s win over RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal.

Mas-Ud Didi Dramani

Born and bred in Ghana, played in the Ghana Premier League for Real Tamele United and Ebusua Dwarfs during his playing days.

The 55-year-old in his coaching career has had some successful spells with both club and country.

He won the league twice for Asante Kotoko in 2012/2013 and 13/14 but before then he had led the the Black Maidens-Ghana U-17 Women’s team to secure a historic bronze medal at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Azerbaijan.

He has served as assistant coach for the Ghana Women’s National Team- Black Queens from 2017-2018.

Last month, he was appointed as head of football at Right to Dreams Academy. His role is to serve as a Transitional Coach with  Right To Dream-owned by Danish Superliga club, FC Nordsjælland.

Didi appears as another option on the list.

James Kwesi Appiah

The only surprising name in the list and his appointment would be a third stint with the team after 2012-2014 and 2017-2020.

He is the most experienced in the list and knows the team inside out. He led Ghana to a third World Cup appearance in 2014 becoming the only Ghanaian coach to do so. Although he couldn’t go beyond the group stages at the tournament in Brazil.

His last major tournament with the Black Stars ended in a round of 16 exit at the AFCON in 2019 where Ghana lost on penalties to Tunisia.

Perhaps the chances of Kwesi Appiah coming back for the third time looks minimal, his reappointment can’t be totally ruled out.
