Manchester United dropped points once again as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday.
United had a bright start to the game, controlling the ball in early exchanges. Fred delivered a great ball with his right foot from the left flank, and Cavani was found unmarked between the two defenders. He directed his header to the bottom left corner, but Pickford tipped it away well.
Two minutes to halftime, United took the lead through Anthony Martial. The Frenchman had not looked alive before the moment he appeared on the scoresheet. Greenwood started the move, fizzing a ball into Fernandes’ feet – he controlled it brilliantly and fed Martial on the left of the box.
Martial ran onto it, shoot, and the effort got the slightest of touches off Mina and flew past Pickford.
Everton broke away and they had their leveler. There was a couple of big United errors but nonetheless, Everton had their equalizer through Townsend. Fernandes’ corner was woeful, cleared near post, and then Fred should have beaten Gray to the ball not once but TWICE. He didn’t, Gray broke on the left, gave it to Doucoure, and he picked out Townsend through on goal.
He composes himself and lashes the bottom corner past the rooted De Gea.
The ball was cleared from a corner and fell to Godfrey. With United’s defense pushing out, Davies hanged around and is free. He receives it, through on goal, could shoot himself, but decides to go across goal to Mina. Mina tapped it into the empty net, but he was offside by half a foot. VAR had a look, and the review was over quickly.
As it stands, the Red Devils are now second in the Premier League for a couple of hours at least, with Everton third on goal difference. It’s four wins, two draws, and one defeat for both sides so far this season.
