The Ghana Premier League (GPL) 2021/22 season bounces back with an opening game held at the Accra Sports Stadium between newly promoted side Accra Lions and Elmina Sharks. It is the first time the Accra newly promoted side Accra Lions playing in the Ghana Premier League since the establishment of the team in 2015.
The first department of the game ended without any goal from both sides but both sides had a lot chances that could have been a goal.
Rauf Salifu nearly gave the newly promoted side the lead from a freekick in the first five minutes of the game.
Goalkeeper Appiah Kubi made a lot of spectacular saves to deny the visitors in the first half. Accra Lions made their first substitution after the 26th minute due to an injury for Rashid Abubakar to come in for Abass Samari Salifu.
In the second half, the away side came into the game determined to hunt the home side for an opener. The visitors took the lead through ex-Phobia skipper Michelle Sarpong on the 64th minute of the game.
The lads were dorminating in terms of possession and widely chasing for an equalizer until Rafiu Salifu’s goal on the 82nd minute to level the game.
The game ended with 1 -1 scoreline as the first results for the GPL 2021/22 season.
Accra Lions will play against Great Olympics at the same venue in Match Day 2 whilst Elmina Sharks will also host Dreams FC.
The first round ends on Sunday, February 13, 2022. The second round of the League will start on February 25 2022 with the Premier League ending on Sunday, June 19, 2022.
