Ghana’s neighbouring country, Ivory Coast have failed to advance into the playoffs of the World Cup qualifiers in Africa after a narrow defeat to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
The Elephants of La Côte d’Ivoire just needed a draw to progress from Group D but Karl Toko Ekambi’s 21st minute goal has denied the West African side to compete in the playoffs.
Ivory Coast have appeared three times at the FIFA World Cup and last competed at the Brazil 2014 World Cup. This will be the second time the Ivorians will missed the mundial to be held in Qatar in the middle of next year after 2014 unlike their neighbors, Ghana who have advanced to the playoffs after a slim win over South Africa on Sunday.
In all, Ivory Coast lost one, drew one and won four of their Group D games while Cameroon lost one and won five.
Cameroon have progressed with 15 maximum points to the 13 of Ivory Coast.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will hope to qualify for their 8th World Cup appearance from the playoffs.
