Senegal were held with the Warriors in a goaless draw until Sadio Mane scored for his side for first victory after a penalty decision to demonstrate leadership by example.
The Liverpool forward was named the MOTM after scoring the last minute goal for the last edition’s runner-up.
Zimbabwe are yet to pick victory over Senegal in nine games.
The next game of the tournament comes off 17:00GMT between Ghana and Morocco in Group C opener.
