Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić was named the man of the match in the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia after Real Madrid defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-0 at the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh.
The 36-year Croatian bossed the competition throughout and was delight to watch as he just kicks the ball as though it requires no efforts. Modrić powered Real Marid to victory with a superbly curled strike from a fine pass by Brazilian young forward Rodrigo to put Los Blancos in front before Karim Benzema doubled the lead later in the second half of the ninety minutes. Real Madrid’s 12th Super Cup title won after beat Athletic, means Luca Modrić has now won four (4) Spanish Super cups with Real Madrid, and a total of 17 trophies in all.
“I’ve been on such an amazing journey at the greatest club in the world. I’m really grateful for everything that has happened and to reach 18 trophies is incredible. I hope to win more in the future”, he told the club’s website after the game in Riyadh on Sunday.
While expressing his delight over winning the man of the match, he stressed however, that the most important thing to him is to help the team win, and having won their first trophy for the 2021/22 Spanish football season supersedes all other things.
“I’m really happy to win and to claim the first trophy of the season. Being named man of the match is not the most important thing, the most important thing is getting the win and the first trophy of the season. We will celebrate now, but we have to keep going because we’ve got a long season ahead of us”, he said.
The 2018 Balon D’or winner is in fine form and playing as though he is in his 20s.
