Ghana made history after setting new record at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon by exiting the tournament without winning a single game.
Debutants Comoros sunk Ghana after subjecting the Black Stars to a disappointing 3-2 defeat in their last group game in Douala on Tuesday. The defeat, though was possible considering the various upsets seen in the history of football, was least expected by many Ghanaians, considering the records of Ghana against the newbies.
However, The Coelacanths defied all odds to cause a major upset after defeating Ghana by 3-2, after skipper Andre Ayew was dismissed in the 25th minute of the first half with the scoreline at 1-0 against the four times champions. Ghana were dumped out of the tournament by Comoros, making this the worst ever campaign in Ghana’s 23 times appearance at the tournament. Comoros achieved three major things against Ghana; first ever goal at the Nations Cup, first ever win resulting in first ever point gained in the history of the tournament after they had lost their first two games to Gabon and Morocco.
Following the shocking defeat for Ghana, stakeholders of the game in Ghana and fans of the Ghana national team across the globe have been trying hard to grab updates from the official website of the GFA, but to no avail. Mysteriously, the FA’s official website, www.ghanafa.org went off minutes into the end of the game against Comoros on Tuesday evening. It is unclear what the challenge could be, since the site has been on and feeding followers with several updates throughout.
Fans and some pundits have attributed the unexpected shut down of the GFA website to calculated effort to sway from the heat of the moment. Whiles ghanasportspage.com does not necessarily share same idea, the coincidence remains a shock. From Tuesday evening, January 18 till now, Wednesday morning, January 19 2021 at the time of filing this report, the site remains shut to public access.
The wait is on as to when this seeming technical challenge would be resolved by the FA so as to keep followers of the game fed with official position of the FA.
The new FA President, Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku took office in October 2019, and has achieved a lot of things for Ghana football, ranging from the various leagues played at various levels of football in the country, refereeing grooming policies, trophies won by the younger men and women national teams. However, Ghana’s first AFCON tournament under his administration has written down a history neither him nor the entire Ghanaian population wants to even remember. Together we can rebuild, and Ghana football will rise again to “bring back the love” through the “game chinging policy”.
