Safe the bragging rights, the honour and pride a “small” country like Comoros gets from defeating a football nation like Ghana at the highest stage of football on the African continent is the crown Comoros is celebrating, according to the Football Federation General Secretary, Stephane Aboutoihi.
The Black Stars were handed a shock of their life when AFCON debutants Comoros humiliated them to a 3-2 defeat in their last group match of the ongoing Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon, kicking coach Milovan’s side out of the competition at the group stage for the f5th time in history. Prior to the game on Tuesday night, General Secretary of the Comoros Football Federation insisted that they have learned lessons from their first two matches in the group stage where they lost all to Gabon and Morocco 1-0 and 2-0 respectively, and that Ghana was not going to have it easy against them.
“It’s very possible [to beat Ghana). We learned in the match against Gabon, we learned in the match of Morocco. It’s the first time we go to the Africa Nations Cup, it’s difficult for us but we learned a lot and we will be very careful against Ghana”, Stephane said, speaking exclusively to ghanasportspage.com.
Very few people across the globe who read the story as published by ghanasportspage.com gave prominence to his words, but he came out vindicated and now has explained how proud they fell having succeeded in defeating the four times champions of the tournament, Ghana, to boost their qualification hopes.
“Yesterday we had a historic mystery”, Stephane told our reporters on Wednesday. “I told you [prior to the match against Ghana] that Comoros is a little country so we don’t have a choice. We are small and we learned quickly to exist to be in a place of a big team. So we are proud today to beat Ghana”, he admired.
The victory against Ghana on Tuesday did not just bring joy to the entire Comoros 850,886 estimated population, but also instilled lots of confidence in the team going forward as they hope to benefit from best ranked third place teams slot to make the last 16 of the Cameroon 2021 AFCON.
“We have confidence about (SIC) out performance and our learning spirit is very important. It is wonderful for Comoros, it is wonderful for Africa, it is wonderful for the world because today, any little country can dream and Comoros won but the world of football won yesterday”, Stephane concluded.
