The Coelacanths of Comoros have sealed qualification to the round 16 place of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations ahead of Ghana and defending champions, Algeria who failed to progress from their groups.
This is the firs time Comoros has appeared at the tournament, making history, becoming one of the best third place teams to play in the knockout stage.
The debutants finished third in Group C after beating four times champions, Ghana on Tuesday with 3-2 scoreline.
They opened the AFCON journey with 1-0 defeat to Gabon and also lost 2-0 to Morocco, but fought hard to seal a spot in the next round after belabouring Ghana.
Comoros wouldn’t have qualified for the knockout phase if Algeria had picked a win in the last group game, but the Desert Foxes crashed out after losing 3-1 Ivory Coast in the last group game.
Comoros have now advanced alongside Malawi, Cape Verde and Tunisia. However, Tunisia may may qualify with 6 points to qualify straight from their group if they beat Gambia in their last group game on Thursday.
