Two North African giants, Egypt and Morocco competed in a heavyweight battle in the AFCON 2021 quarter-finals on Sunday evening in Yaounde.
The Pharaohs won the game to cement a place in the last four of the tournament after ruling with a come-back victory at the extra time over the Atlas Lions.
The Moroccans settled in the game with a lead at the 7th minute by Sofiane Boufal. He scored through a penalty reward after PSG’s Hakimi was fouled.
The 2-1 win for Egypt was a battle, though a slow-moving, attritional battle. Hakimi was not enough of a factor for Morocco and it was Mohamed Salah who took the stage and the game with his tap-in and superb run and finish to set up Trezeguet for the winner to seal the win following Mohammed Salah’s equalizer.
Goalkeeper Bounou made a fine save from Mohamed and the ball squirts to Salah who has read the ball and converted it cooly. It had been coming from the first kick of the second half.
Mo Salah and his boys fought for the win during the extra time to progress.
They will play Cameroon at the next stage of the competition.
