League leaders Asante Kotoko ended their GPL Week 16 encounter against Elmina Sharks at the Nduom Sports Complex with disappointing 2-1 defeat.
Elmina Sharks who are sitting at the last bottom of the league table, stopped the Porcupines from long-term unbeaten run with an insightful and high pressing football to seal the maximum points.
Kotoko aimed to grab a win to extend their lead on the with seven points ahead of Bechem United who sit at the second position with 29 points but they were held in an epic and tumble clash.
The Porcupines came into the game with 2-0 sensational victory over Great Olympics in Week 15 at the Kumasi Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Dickson Afoakwa had the first goal to hand the visitors a lead at the 39minutes but Sharks levelled the game at the 42nd minutes through Ebenezer Adukwa.
After recess, Elmina Sharks secured a penalty following a handball in the box of the visitors at the 50th minute.
Ibrahim Danlad saved the first kick but the referee called for it to be retaken and it was coolly converted by Alhaji Mustapha to steal the lead.
Coach Prosper Nartey Ogum’s side pressed and cope in search for the equalizer to share the spoils but their effort wasn’t enough to hand them the leveller.
It ended in a disappointing 2-1 defeat to the Porcupines after the hosts came from behind to punish them at home.
Despite the defeat, the Warriors will still be at the first position on the table with 33points whiles Sharks also remains at the bottom side with 11points.
The outcome of the result is not what the Reds wanted, but will take it in their strides and move on.
