Top Ghanaian sports journalist and the president of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana, Kwabena Yeboah has divulged how sad he was when the Black Stars boycotted training in Brazil because of money.
During the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, the then Ghanaian government led by President John Dramani Mahama sent a plane carrying U.S.$ 3 million cash following the Black Stars’ alleged threat to boycott training after their first two games against USA and Germany.
It looks like the bizarre crisis that hit the Ghana Black Stars camp in Brazil caused the retirement of some players from the national team.
The Black Stars players were promised $75,000 each as an appearance fee and this money was to be taken from a large amount FIFA paid to Ghana for qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. However, the players complained that they have not been given any appearance fees, two weeks after the World Cup started—contrary to the GFA’s promise.
Speaking on GTV Sports+ ‘Saving Our Passion’ show as a guest, he said; “I was in total shock and tears when the Black Stars players boycotted training in Brazil during the 2014 World Cup just because of money.”
