Liverpool defeated Chelsea to in the Carabao Cup after goaleeper Kepa Arrizabalaga missed the decisive penalty kick in what was a nervy and marathon 11-10 shootout at Wembley.
Senegal’s Mendy kept the posts on the day throughout the 90 minutes of regular time and into over 119 minutes of the extra time, but Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel decided to bring on Kepa to replace Mendy purposely for the shootouts. However, the Spanish shot stopper failed to save a single kick and later blasted his own chance over the bar to hand the Reds victory after 120 minutes of goalless draw.
The win was Liverpool’s first since 2012, and has become the most successful club in the history of the competition now with nine (9) titles. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been chasing a domestic cup victory with the club for long, and the win against Chelsea on Sunday ended that drought on his rich CV with the Reds.
