Ghanaian midfielder Elisha Owusu has been handed his maiden national team call up into the Black Stars as part of Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off against Nigeria on March 25 and and 29 in Kumasi and Abuja respectively.

The France born midfielder has always wished to represent Ghana at the national level, and was over the moon to have received a call up to wear the national colours of Ghana. Elisha, 24, plays in the Belgian Pro League, the country’s elite division for for K.A.A Gent after joining them from Olympique Lyonnais in 2019.

Elisha Owusu was among the lots of the players who arrived at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on Monday evening, and he has expressed his delight for the call up, and expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for the love shown him upon arrival.

“I was very very happy, I was very proud. I was thinking about my parents and my parents were so happy. I have followed the Ghana national team when I was a kid and for me it was a big achievement and blessing to be here”, Elisha told reporters upon his arrival at the KIA on Monday evening.

Born in France to Ghanaian parents of Ghanaian decent, Elisha had the chance to choose France over Ghana, but he says he feels he has to play for the country of his parents, and believes his decision is worth it. He described his call up as ”a dream come true”.

“[I chose to play for Ghana] because I always want to play for Ghana, I want to play for the country of my parents, I want to play for my country Ghana because I feel like it’s here that I want to play, so I waited and I feel like I’m ready to play for Ghana”, he said.

“It’s amazing, it’s a big call up because we fight to play at the World Cup and I think every player wants to play at the world Cup so I think I’m so happy also. When the coach of Ghana called me I was happy because for me it was like a dream come true to come and play for Ghana so I think we will give everything for the Ghanaian people and we will try to win this game for Ghana”, he added.
