Accra Hearts of Oak midfielder Sulley Ali Muntari is unhappy about Ghana playing against Nigeria in the final play-off of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as the pairing means one of these two giants in African football is going to certainly miss out on the final tournament in November.
Muntari has described the fixture as an “unfortunate” one as he would love to see both Ghana and Nigeria qualify for the World Cup. To him, having both Nigeria and Ghana playing in the World Cup finals is the best thing ever, and losing of them due to the results of the draw for the play-off is unfortunate.
“Black Stars is for all of us, it’s for Ghana. If we qualify for the World Cup that’s what we want, and will make the whole nation proud. It’s unfortunate that we going to play our own brothers, Nigeria”, Muntari told reporters on Sunday.
The Hearts of Oak star stated categorically that he wishes Ghana never played against the Super Eagles, not because Ghana cannot beat Nigeria, but because having both nations playing in the World Cup is the best thing.
“I wish we didn’t play them because if Nigeria is in the World Cup and Ghana is in the World Cup that’s the best thing ever, because we are close – we are brothers, but then unfortunately we have to play them so, we will prepare well and face them.”, he said.
Asked whether the technical handlers of the Black Stars have given him a call to accept invitation into the squad to face Nigeria, the UEFA Champions League winner made jokes out of it, saying, “I got a call from my son, that’s it”.
