Mohamed Elneny appears to be on the brink of signing a new Arsenal contract after a member of the Egyptian national teams technical squad tweeted and quickly deleted a congratulations message to the midfielder. Elneny has become a fixture for Arsenal in recent weeks and a standout player in a number of big victories.
The 29-year-old has only played in 11 Premier League matches this season but Mikel Arteta has started him in each of the Gunners last four matches, all four of which have ended in victory. Wins against Chelsea, Manchester United, West Ham and Leeds have put Arsenal in the drivers’ seat to secure that fourth spot in next season’s Champions League.
It is a run of form that has sparked talk that Elneny could be offered a new contract at the Emirates with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season. It was a question put to Arteta in the aftermath of the win against United with the Spaniard hinting that talks were in the offing.
“I always said that for me, he’s one of the most important members of the squad,” Arteta told a press conference in April. “For what he does when you give him the chance to play and for the things when he doesn’t play.
It’s a phenomenal person and then you have to judge the footballer as someone who probably doesn’t get the credit that he deserves.”
But it appears that Elneny may have already come to an agreement over his new deal. As reported by Egyptian sports outlet FilGoal on Twitter, a member of the national team staff published a tweet congratulating the midfielder on his new contract at the Emirates. A Reddit user then shared the post along with the caption: “A member of Egypt technical team congratulates El Neny on signing his new Arsenal deal.”
Thomas Partey has suffered with injuries this season, allowing Elneny his chance late in the campaign with Albert Sambi Lokonga also struggling with fitness issues. It is now up to Arteta and Edu to decide whether or not his performances warrant a new deal.
