It is a known fact that Asante Kotoko star man Frank Thierry Mbella Etouga has established himself as the deadliest finisher in the ongoing Ghana Premier League (GPL) season, but secrets behind the Cameroonian’s scoring prowess may not be common to every follower of the game.
As a new import in the GPL, Etouga has found the back of the net 19 times already with six matches to end the season, and coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has explained why the Cameroonian has been firing from a cylinders.
Speaking to the press after Asante Kotoko drew 1-1 with Aduana Stars at the Baba Yara sports stadium on Sunday, coach Prosper Narteh was quizzed on why Mbella seems to be the only one scoring all the goals for Asante Kotoko. Mbella scored a rocket of a goal to put Asante Kotoko ahead before Bright Adjei leveled at the dying embers of the game for Aduana Stars, and Prosper is asked why other players can’t win matches for the club if Mbella fails to score?
“Mbella scores because per our game plan he positions himself very well, and that is why most of the chances go to him”, coach Ogum told reporters.
He debunked the notion that other players are failing to score if Mbella doesn’t.
“If he (Mbella) doesn’t score others score, we don’t have a problem. Go through the score statistics of Kotoko – Imoro Ibrahim has scored, Mudasiru (Salifu) has scored, it goes on and on but he (Mbella) has scored many of these goals. So it is not that when he doesn’t score we can’t win.
“Mfegue has also scored severally and he has assisted, so if he (Mbella) doesn’t score there are other equally competent players to also score. But he (Mbella) is more prolific comparable to the others; quarter chances he can convert, half chances he can convert, full chances he can convert”, he explained.
In his first season in the GPL, Mbella has already smashed former ASANTE Kotoko striker Eric Bekoe’s long standing record of 17 goals with which he won the golden boot for the club, and with six more matches to end the season, Mbella can potentially break Hearts of Oak’s former striker Mahatma Otoo’s 20 goals record as well.
