• Frank Etouga Mbella failed to break Ishmael Addo’s record.
Ex-Asante Kotoko goal machine Kwame Poku has tipped a Ghanaian to smash Ishmael Addo’s 21-year goal-scoring record.
Addo scored 22 goals during the 2000/01 season, a figure it was felt would never be matched in recent times.
The Porcupines poster boy Franck Mbella Etouga failed to tie Ishmael Addo’s 22 goals in a single Ghana Premier League season record.
The Porcupine Warriors drew 1-1 with Accra Lions on Saturday afternoon in their last fixture of the 2021/22 season at the Accra Sports Stadium and the Cameroonian striker could not find the back of the net to break the record.
He bagged 21 goals in his debut season in the Ghana Premier League.
But after scoring the 21 goals in the top-flight league this term, he was tipped to do magic in yesterday’s game to equal or break that long-term record made by the ex-Rainbow attacker, Ishmael Addo.
Ashantigold striker Yaw Annor who is battling Mbella for the goal king award needs a brace or hat-trick to equal or break Ishmael Addo’s record in today’s game against Bibiani Gold Stars.
Speaking before Kotoko’s game against Accra Lions, the Algerian-based striker said, “For me as a Ghanaian, I wish Ishmael Addo will maintain that record always. It is fine if he scores to equal but it will be good for a Ghanaian to hold that record. There’s nothing wrong with him winning the golden boot with 21 goals. This record is what Ishmael Addo is benefiting from now. I will be happy for Ghanaian to break that record because Etouga will not stay here, he will take the glory back to his country,” Kwame Poku stated on Atinka Tv’s Kick-Off Sports on Friday.
Kwame Opoku left Kotoko last season to join USM Algiers after signing a four and half years deal with the Algerian giants.
The headline maker became the second GPL goal king contender to join the Algerian League after former WAFA player Ebenezer Lomotey joined ES. Setif.
He scored seven goals for Asante Kotoko in the first round during last season’s Ghana Premier League.
