Kasoa-based Cheetah FC failed to grab the opportunity to qualify for Ghana’s National Division One league despite being awarded two penalties in the second half of the final match of the Central Region Second Division Middle League against Kenpong Academy.
Rather,Kenpong Academy booked the sole ticket and qualifies to join Ghana’s second-tier competition next season having won 3-1 over Cheetah. The Kenpong boys had looked stronger in the tournament having scored the highest number of goals (16) and conceded just two.
With Cheetah qualifying for the final through a protest after losing their semi-final clash against Betenase , they were hopeful of beating Kenpong who paraded the youngest squad in the 16-team Middle league at Ajumako Assessam and Mankessim.
But Kenpong shocked Cheetah with a well-fought win of 3-1 with Cheetah scoring from the spot and wasting another spot-kick to send their supporters into a disappointing mood. Daniel Ziaba Moro scored the first goal while Emmanuel Egyir scored a brace to seal the victory. Ziaba won the goal king title of the tournament with 6 goals.
Kennedy Somuah Agyapong, popularly known as Kenpong Capucino , the owner of the Winneba-based side watched his lads for the first time since the academy was formed and was seen with all smiles after his team qualified for the Division One Middle league.
The RFA Chairman Robert Duncan presented the World Cuplike trophy to Kenpong captain Musah Hamzatta , who was flanked by his colleagues notably Daniel Ziaba Moro and others, with head coach Fred Gidigilo, former national stars Sammy Adjei and Shilla Alhassan, Frank Owusu Olembe among others celebrating through a convoy ride from Ajumako to Winneba. They all wore their flashy medals presented to them by the RFA.
The Winneba township went agog on their arrival as the townsfolk cheered Kenpong on for bringing back Division One league to Winneba.
