Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko captain and penalty expert, Amos Frimpong has lamented over what GPL players receive as their salaries.
According to the former Porcupine Warriors defender, players in the domestic top flight are “suffering” because of the meagre salaries they receive.
Ghana Premier League clubs have a notoriety of paying their players below the minimum wages and arguably one of the low earning leagues in Africa, a situation which has led the best of talents to depart the shores of Ghana for better offers in other African countries.
Amos Frimpong who played Asante Kotoko for seven seasons since joining the club in 2011 stated that he passed through what is called ‘meagre salaries’ and it sad for Ghanaian players to suffer in the local league.
Speaking to Ghanasportspage.com, the 2017 WAFU Zone B winner, lamented, “To be honest, I hope you’ve heard a lot about this. If you have a brother or a colleague in the system then you would notice that Ghanaian players who are in the local league are suffering. We are suffering.
“I am saying this because I have passed through,” Amos stated.
“Sitting back you might think that the GPL player is okay. If there’s no help from God for you to play Kotoko or Hearts and one or two teams who are able to pay something small then I can tell you that the players are suffering. That’s why Ghanaian players will always accept an offer from neighboring African countries if only it is good because if not what he earns here at the end of the month cannot help him to take care of his life and the family. Aside that, receiving of the salary too is a problem. Per this, I can say Ghanaian players in the local league are suffering.” He concluded.
Amos was a member of the Warriors squad that beat Arch rivals Hearts of Oak 3-1 to clinch the 2017 MTN FA Cup in Tamale.
The dependable right back was bought to fill in for the departing of Yaw Frimpong to TP Mazembe.
He joined Kotoko from B.A United, winning three Premier League titles and two FA Cups with the club before joining Guinean side, AS Khaloum on a two-year deal.
After his two years stay with the club, he joined GPL side Eleven Wonders on a free transfer to help them escape relegation.
Amos later returned into the Guinean Ligue 1 for the second time to sign a year deal with CI Kamsar before the start of 2021/22 campaign. His contract with the club expired after the just ended season and talks are ongoing for contract extension as confirmed to GSP1.
