CEO of Berekum Chelsea and executive council member of the Ghana Football Association, Nana Oduro Sarfo has reacted to betting in Ghana football after BetPawa agreed to become the headline sponsor of the Ghana Premier League.
The veteran football administrator insists betting is good but the football runners and the footballers should step aside for transparency of the game.
On Wednesday, August 3, 2022 the Ghana Football Association unveiled online betting company, Betpawa as the new headline sponsor of the Ghana Premier League for three years.
This is the first time in seven years after Zylofon Cash agreed to pump in 10million US dollars into the Ghana Premier League.
Oduro Sarfo was impressed with the 6million US dollars new sponsorship deal.
Whiles speaking to Ghanasportspage.com after the unveiling of the new headline sponsors, he disclosed that betting is good but the football administrators and other football people should not be engaged.
“I’ve been saying that betting is good for the people in the country but is here that you can see the negativities. Sometimes you could hear someone has won about 1.5million Ghana cedis but we the players, the football runners are not allowed. As a commentator you can stake your bet because you don’t run any club.
“You don’t have the power but for me as a football runner, I should not be seen in betting as well as the players and the GFA itself. I think betting is good because in UK the betting firm are supporting their league and even in other countries but we don’t see what is happening there like what we are seeing here,” Nana Oduro Sarfo stated.
He made the disclosure after he was questioned about the decision to bring in betting firm to sponsor the league whiles the GFA is trying to fight corruption in Ghana football following Ashantigold and Inter Allies match-fixing and betting scandal.
