The Director General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi is confident that Ghana can win the hosting right for the Africa Cup of Nations with the current facilities.
Ghana has already hosted the AFCON on four occasions – independently in 1963, 1978 and 2008, and jointly with Nigeria in 2000.
According to the NSA boss, the existing sporting facilities in the country which are of international standards puts Ghana in pole position to host the Africa Cup of Nations whenever the opportunity is given.
Speaking to Ghanasportspage.com after the National Fitness Day maiden edition launch at the Accra Sports Stadium’s Media Center, Professor Twumasi said he is confident that Ghana has all the necessary requirements and facilities to host the tournament.
“For the AFCON, Ghana is at the right position of hosting it checking at the great facilities we have. The facilities are good now.
“Our President too has added ten Multipurpose Astroturfs to it in every region. At some places it is left with fifteen or ten percent for it to be accomplished. We can even complete now,” Professor Twumasi stated.
“We were having only two astroturfs in 2017 (Tema and Paa Kwasi Ndoum’s own) but for now we have more than hundred astroturfs. In terms of football facilities, is in abundance.
“Going for AFCON hosting right, I am very confident that we can win it”.
“We are about to host All African Games and the Legon Stadium too will be available soon. Ghana has more than what we need to host the AFCON.
“Côte D’Ivoire is hosting it and why not Ghana?” He concluded.
The upcoming African Cup of Nations which has been postponed to 2024 will be hosted by Ghana’s neighbor, Côte D’Ivoire.
The competition which was originally scheduled for 2023 will feature 24 teams for the third time since the expansion after the 2017 edition.
