Chairman for the MTN FA Cup Committee, Wilson Arthur has stepped in to comment on Asamoah Gyan’s possible Black Stars return conversation ahead of the World Cup 2022.
He is against the motion of giving a call-up to Ghana’s all-time top scorer but he prefers the inclusion of former FC Basel defender, Samuel Inkoom ahead of the world’s most prestigious tournament checking on his current performance and form.
Gyan, who played his last game for Ghana against Tunisia in 2019 is not ruling out the possibility of representing the nation at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but the FA Cup boss insists Samuel Inkoom will rather fit into Ghana’s squad and Otto Addo’s selection than the unattached, striker.
Speaking in an interview with Atinka FM Sports in Accra, he said; “Before the MTN FA Cup finals I went to the training grounds of both sides as part of the hype we did and what I saw at Hearts was what they implemented in the game to beat Bechem United with that two goals.
“Playing at the wings and cutting in with that crosses was something they rehearsed. That’s what they did.
“Checking at Samuel Inkoom’s performance, his form, and his fitness, he can play in this national team but it depends on the coach to select the best players. I will rather choose Samuel Inkoom than Asamoah Gyan if I am the coach,” said Wilson Arthur.
Samuel Inkoom, the Hearts of Oak right-back and the former U-20 World Cup winner last appeared in Ghana’s jersey during the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, helping them reach the final, where they lost in a penalty shootout against the Ivory Coast.
His return to the local scene has been amazing after joining the Rainbows months ago. He took over Fatawu Mohammed’s position last season and aided the team for the MTN FA Cup title with the classic assist.
