No Maguire as the ‘Red Devils’ survive to clinch victory in the first of three games with a surprise win over Liverpool

The giants of Old Trafford, Manchester United stunned Liverpool to record their first win of the season with a 2-1 scoreline on Monday evening in the English Premier League Day 3 fixture.

United were quicker off the blocks in the North-West derby as they pressed Liverpool from the very first whistle.

Liverpool improved throughout the half with the teams headed towards break with United the far happier side.

A surprise lineup from Ten Hag saw Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire benched whiles their new signing from Real Madrid, Casemiro was in the stands.

It was the signal for Jason Sancho, the 22-year-old player to make himself an instant hero after getting Manchester United’s first goal of the campaign with the help from Anthony Elanga.

For United’s second goal, they made the build up from their back before a substitute, Martial gave a sublime pass for Rashford to score on the 53rd minute.

Liverpool sustained pressure and pulled a goal back to make it 2-1 on the 81st minute which was not enough to share spoils at the Old Trafford.

Carvalho’s effort was saved by De Gea and the ball went straight to Salah, who headed the ball home from close-range.

With the hosts holding on to their lead, they made three changes as Van de Beek, Ronaldo and Wan-Bissaka come on for Eriksen, Rashford and Dalot.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Tsimikas was on for Robertson.

It seems ludicrous to talk in such terms after only five league games but Liverpool’s long EPL unbeaten run in 2022 has been overshadowed by struggling side, Manchester United.

Manchester United have climbed to the fourteenth position with three points.

Liverpool, who are yet to record a win are on the sixteenth place with two points.
