Veteran Ghanaian football administrator, Kofi Manu ‘Blue Boy’ has explained hwy Ghana’s all time top-scorer, ‘Baby Jet’ Asamoah Gyan can score at the World Cup when given only twenty minutes opportunity to play for the Black Stars.
Asamoah Gyan’s wish to rejoin the Black Stars was welcomed by the veteran football administrator, but he added that the striker should only be considered if he is fit.
The former Sunderland forward, in a recent interview with BBC declared his readiness and feelings to rejoin the four times African champions at the World Cup.
Gyan’s precedence for his return is based on Roger Milla playing for Cameroon in the 1994 World Cup when he was 41 years.
However, the Cameronian international was playing an active football before the tournament. Based on this Kofi Manu has urged Asamoah Gyan not to disgrace himself if has no fitness.
Reacting to Asamoah Gyan’s bid to join the national team for the upcoming FIFA World Cup with Sompa Tv Kofi Manu said, “For Asamoah Gyan, it depends on his fitness. In 1988, at the age of 36, Milla celebrated his early retirement from international football with a jubilee in Cameroon after losing to Ghana in an Olympic qualifers. Milla was still playing for Tonnerre when the Cameronian national team had qualified for the World Cup and at some point they saw that they were having only Omam-Biyik who came from the second to play Indomitable Lions. They needed somebody and people started making allegations for Milla.
“However, in 1990, he received a phone call from the President of Cameroon Paul Biya, who pleaded with him to come out of international retirement and rejoin the national team. He agreed, and went to Italy with the Indomitable Lions for the 1990 World Cup, where he would cause a sensation and justified himself.”
ON WHY GYAN CAN STILL SCORE AT THE WORLD CUP
“When Asamoah Gyan is on the pitch he will score from the chances these boys are squandering even if he’s given only 20minutes because at that level you have quality players who will help him to perform. For me he can be called if only he is fit but if there’s no fitness, I will advice him not to disgrace himself. On the pitch three players can attack Asamoah Gyan,” he told Abou Diaby.
Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 51 goals. He represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
The 37 year old last played for country during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Egypt.
