Retired Ghanaian footballer, Bernard Don Bortey has asked the management of Hearts of Oak to give him the chance to help his former club qualify ahead of ASR Bamako on Sunday.
Hearts of Oak suffered a 3-0 defeat in the first leg of the CAF Confederations Cup second preliminary round first leg in Mali.
The Phobians will have to win the second leg with a 4-0 scoreline to advance ahead of the Malians.
However, Don Bortey who helped the team to win the title in 2004 has called on the Rainbows to give him the chance to give the players the spirit of breaking the 2006 record when the team overturned a 4-0 scoreline against St. George of Ethiopia.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM he said, “What I have to tell the players and the entire management of Hearts of Oak is that they shouldn’t neglect me. I am for them and they don’t know what I can do for them. Even the word that will come out from my mouth is fire because is a gift from God.
“They should go and check. I [Don Bortey] is a prophet of Ghana football up to now. I am called Elijah [Elijah Bernard Don Bortey]
“Those who knows Don Bortey from his childhood knows that I can do it. Why not I won’t give it to someone. If the leaders think they want to qualify then I want to see them with the players. I want to see them because Hearts of Oak have to qualify. We have done it before. We overturned a 4-0 scoreline. If they able to score two in the first ten minutes then they can even score six. We will eliminate them.
“They should just buy me the ticket. I don’t need anything from them. Because for my name [Don Bortey] to be mentioned is all because of Hearts although I started it in GAPOHA but I got the name more at Hearts of Oak. They’ve done something great for me and I will never turn my back to them. I will keep supporting them because Hearts of Oak is Don Bortey and Don Bortey is Hearts of Oak.
“I am in Kumasi now and I can come with my money and if I am able to do it for them… am telling you the truth some will say bad things about me but I am there for negative things because I am like Jesus Christ. He was even crucified without committing any sin. I am a sinner but I will let them know.
*“They should give me the chance and I will disguise myself and enter the field with the boys.* It won’t be tough. If am with them at the dressing room and come out with them to the pitch I will snatch the fans for them. I will let them know that they need Chapter O like our time. I want them to cheer the boys up with the song they sung during our time.”
