Ghana’s all-time top scorer, Asamoah Gyan isn’t included on Ghana’s squad list for the World Cup.
The ex-Sunderland striker will not be able to play at his third World Cup appearance despite his ambitions to return after two years of absence.
The legendary striker after revealing his readings to make a return to the senior national soccer team started training, hoping to get back into shape for the tournament.
However, the unattached striker’s name is not in Otto Addo’s 55-man provisional squad for the mundial which kicks off after 27 days.
Gyan, who has scored 51 goals for Ghana at the senior level, said he is bidding to make a shock return to the international fold as he eyes a spot in Ghana’s World Cup squad.
He has been sidelined, with his last appearance for the national team coming three years ago. The Sunderland man was a substitute in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 clashes against Tunisia.
Gyan has since not been invited with his club career in recent years making it very difficult to consider him for selection.
The 36-year-old forward last played a competitive game in May 2021, representing Legon Cities against WAFA in a Ghana Premier League. Months later, he terminated his contract with the Accra-based club and is still looking for a new club.
The 2010 BBC African Footballer of The Year hasn’t been active for 16 months, leading many to believe that he has retired. But in an interview with BBC, Gyan dispelled claims of retirement, suggesting he has unfinished business, especially with Black Stars and anything can happen.
