Ex-Black Stars superstar, Sulley Muntari has opened up on why he couldn’t join the reigning champions of the Ghana Premier League after the 2021/22 season.
The experienced midfielder Muntari was reported to have agreed on a contract with the Ghanaian champions ahead of their participation in the CAF Champions League but the deal was later turned down.
However, the ex-Seria A star has disclosed that he didn’t want to disgrace himself in Africa upon his achievement after he had held talks with both clubs to build a strong team before the campaign.
“I had a few talks with them. I spoke with some of their board members. I wanted to help them for Africa and I was with Hearts of Oak at that time. I told them to build a very strong after my contract had expired with them because I didn’t want to go and disgrace myself outside in the African campaign. For a competition like the Champions League or other competitions, you need to prepare with the players who helped you to qualify and build the team. I was taking with Hearts to build the team. The management has different ideas but if someone is having a different idea although you will give them different plans to do it if they don’t push it, you have nothing to do. Am telling you the truth. I didn’t want to go and disgrace myself,” he revealed in an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah.
“I’ve worked hard in terms of football so I didn’t want to disgrace myself upon my achievement so I was talking with Kotoko about building a strong team. It wasn’t like Hearts failed to do what I demanded that’s why I planned to join Kotoko, no. It was the same mentality, just to build a strong team because the moment you build a strong team, the following year you can sell two or three of your players, get money, and then build the team again. That’s what I wanted to do but here the mentality is different.”
Sulley Muntari joined the Ghana Premier League champions earlier this year and was a key player for the Phobians last season.
The 37-year-old proved his mettle in the games he featured for the club and helped them to win the MTN FA Cup.
