Real Tamale United stunned BetPawa Premier League holders Asante Kotoko for the second time in 2022 at the Aliu Mahama Stadium on Saturday with a spirited performance.
The Northern giants humbled the Porcupine Warriors with a 2-1 scoreline in their last meeting and another 2-1 comeback win by the Tamale-based team saw them hand the defending champions their second league defeat to end their three-game unbeaten run on matchday 8.
Georges Mfegue’s 43rd-minute goal separated both sides. Still, Real Tamale United came from behind with a spirited performance in the second half to claim the spoils courtesy of Issah Kukah and David Abagna.
RTU was able to thwart every attempt by Kotoko to restore parity after the break and doubled the lead within two minutes through David Abagna after Issah Kuka’s equalizer during the 61st and the 63rd minute.
However, the game turned as the host started to dominate and from this point, it was a difficult match for the reds.
Coach Zerbo tried to overturn the scoreline by making some changes but his substitution had no impact on the game.
Kotoko could go into the World Cup break five points off the top of the table should Aduana Stars win against Tamale City later on Sunday.
The win leaves RTU in the eighth position with 11 points.
